The study abroad consulting industry in India is largely unregulated. Anyone can set up shop, charge high fees, and make promises they cannot keep. Every year, thousands of Indian students lose money. And sometimes their university seats. Because they trusted the wrong consultant.
Here are five signs that a consultant is not the right choice for you.
Red Flag 1: Guaranteed Admission Promises
No legitimate consultant can guarantee admission to any university. Universities make their own admissions decisions based on hundreds of factors.
If a consultant tells you that they have 'special connections' with universities or can 'guarantee' your admission, that is a serious warning sign. They are either misleading you or, worse, involved in fraudulent practices.
Red Flag 2: They Push Specific Universities Without Understanding Your Profile
A good consultant asks questions. They want to understand your academic background, work experience, career goals, financial situation, and personal preferences before making any recommendations.
A bad consultant pushes the same universities to every student. Often because they have a referral arrangement with those institutions and earn a commission per student enrolled. Ask directly: 'Do you receive a fee from universities for referrals?' A reputable consultant will answer honestly.
Red Flag 3: Vague or Absent Pricing
Legitimate consultants are clear about what they charge. If a consultant's fees are vague, structured to extract money at every stage, or seem unreasonably high with no clear breakdown, be cautious.
You should receive a clear service agreement before paying anything. If a consultant asks for large upfront payments without a written contract, walk away.
Red Flag 4: They Write Your SOP for You
Your Statement of Purpose is your document. It should reflect your own voice, your own experiences, and your own motivations. A consultant who offers to 'write your SOP for you' is doing you a disservice. And putting your application at risk.
Reputable consultants guide you through the SOP writing process. They help you identify the right narrative, give feedback on your drafts, and ensure the final version is authentic. They do not write it on your behalf.
Red Flag 5: No Transparency About Their Track Record
Ask for data. How many students have they placed at your target universities? What was the visa success rate? Can they connect you with past students who are willing to share their experience?
A consultant with nothing to hide will be happy to share this information. One who deflects, makes vague claims, or becomes defensive when asked for specifics should be treated with caution.
What a Trustworthy Consultant Does Instead
- Gives you an honest assessment of your chances at each university.
- Explains all fees clearly and provides a written service agreement.
- Coaches you through SOP writing rather than writing it for you.
- Helps you build a balanced university list. Not just prestigious names.
- Stays available after your visa is approved, for pre-departure and post-landing queries.
